The Alone in a Crowd

You're surrounded by people who love you. And you have never felt more alone in your life.

YOUR RESULT

THE RECOGNITION

The people in your life are good people. They show up. They check in. They ask how you're doing and they mean it.

And somehow none of it reaches the place where you actually are. Because what you need isn't someone who loves you. It's someone who understands you — specifically, in this, in the particular texture of what you've been through.

So you've learned to perform a version of okayness that protects them from worrying too much. You give them the answer that ends the conversation rather than the one that starts the real one. And you go home and carry the rest alone.
"Loneliness inside a loving community is one of the most disorienting experiences there is. It makes you feel ungrateful for what you have — when really you're just missing something it can't provide. "

YOUR RESULT

Here's what's underneath the isolation: you've stopped asking. Maybe because you've been let down before — you reached for the real conversation and got a platitude instead. Maybe because you don't want to be a burden.

But there is also this: the people who would understand you do exist. They are out there — women who have been where you've been, who know the specific aloneness of carrying this particular kind of loss. You haven't found them yet. Or you have found them and haven't let them all the way in.

The beautiful life doesn't get built in isolation. It gets built in community — the right community. And finding it is not a luxury. It is the work.

THE REFRAME

Find Your DAMN People
Being surrounded by people who love you but can't quite reach you isn't a verdict on your relationships. It's information about what this season requires.

The Do the DAMN Thing Method has a step called Find Your DAMN People — and it's built on this understanding: the people you need right now are not necessarily the ones who have been with you the longest. They are the ones who can be with you most fully in this specific kind of hard.

Love is not the same as understanding. You have love. What you're missing is the specific presence of someone who has been where you are. That person exists. Finding her is not a luxury. It's the work.
Find Your DAMN People
Somewhere out there is a woman who is on the same path as you. Not ahead of you. Not behind you. Right beside you — navigating the same kind of loss, the same season, the same specific weight. You may not know her yet.

But she exists. And finding her — your path partner — will change the experience of everything you're carrying.

The move isn't to explain your whole story to someone new. It's smaller than that. Think about who in your life, or just outside it, might genuinely get it. A group you haven't joined yet. A woman you've been meaning to reach out to. Someone whose story has mirrored yours in some way.

One person. One message. That's it. Not to fix the isolation — just to begin to find the person who will walk it with you.

YOUR ONE DO THE DAMN THING MOVE

IN THE BOOK

When Mark died, Bevin's friends showed up — literally on her doorstep, armed with food and presence and love. She was surrounded by people who cared. And she has never felt more alone in her life.

It wasn't until she found a community of young widows — women who knew, without explanation, the specific weight of what she was carrying — that something shifted. Not because the grief got smaller. Because she wasn't translating it anymore.

That's what your Path Partner does. She understands so much because she is on a similar journey and all of a sudden you feel so much less alone.

ONE MORE THING

"I'm finishing a book about what it looks like to find your people in the aftermath of loss — the ones who don't need you to translate your experience into something easier to hear. I'm writing it for you — and I'd love for you to be part of the journey as I bring it into the world."
